Connecting the Campus and Technology

There are two options for streaming media from your personal www.appstate.edu server space. One is to publish media in a private directory only accessible by the AsULearn course management system (this is recommended for copyrighted materials used in your online course). The second option is to publish media in a public directory for integration in websites other than AsULearn (such as your personal ASU website or departmental website).

AsULearn Media Integration

1. Follow the FTP instructions for publishing streaming media to your personal server space (PC / Mac). Make sure to publish your encoded FLV or Mp3 files to the private_flash directory created when you requested a streaming account.
2. Login to your AsULearn course and create a link to the media from any supported resource or activity (Book/Insert a label/Compose a web page/Forum/Lesson/Questionnaire/Quiz/Wiki).
   
   
   
   
   
3. Enter one of the following URL formats in the URL field:
   
   URL for FLV and Mp4 video files:
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/private/[username]/[filename].flv
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/private/[username]/[filename].mp4
   
   URL for Mp3 audio files:
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/private/[username]/[filename].mp3
   
   Example URL:
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/private/simmonsgc/sample.flv
   
   

Webpage Integration

It is also possible to integrate your media in a webpage outside of AsULearn, but this process requires some basic knowledge of the Adobe Flash authoring application (or a 3rd party FLV player). The page referencing the file will need to have an appstate.edu address. The instructions and URLs below are for using the Adobe Flash CS4 application to import your video and create the swf reference file.

1. Publish your encoded flv files to the public_flash directory, created when you requested a streaming account.
2. Launch Adobe Flash CS4 and choose 'File/Import/Import Video' this will walk you through importing a video to the application's stage. Use the following file paths for Flash CS4 media integration:
   
   File path for FLV and Mp4 video files:
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/vod/[username]/[filename].flv
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/vod/mp4:[username]/[filename].mp4
   
   File path for Mp3 audio files:
   rtmp://streams.appstate.edu/vod/mp3:[username]/[filename]
   
   * If you are using a version of Adobe Flash prior to CS4 (or a 3rd party FLV player) the above URLs may not work. Please call 262-7871 for further assistance.
