Encoding to Flash Video

There are several options for getting your video files to the acceptable FLV format, the following instructions are for using the Flash Video Encoder that comes with Flash CS3. If you are using Camtasia for The encoder is a standalone application that is available through the Application Explorer (or Casper Server for Mac users) of any university owned machine.

If you are producing a screen recording using Camtasia there is an option to save your media as FLV/SWF file format.

  1. Launch the Flash Video Encoder and click the Add button, then choose your source video.
    The encoder supports the following file types: Active Streaming Forma (.asf), AVI (.avi), DV (.dv), MPEG/MPEG-4 (.mpg, .mpeg, .mp4), QuickTime (.mov), Windows Media Video (.wmv)

  2. Optimize your encoding settings by selecting your video and clicking the Settings... button.

  3. Within Settings, there are several tabs.

    Under Encoding Profiles, leave the default Flash 8 – Medium Quality.  For the Output file name, type a short file name that indicates the content.  Avoid spaces.  If you increase the quality, it means increasing the likelihood that users will complain about lag times and ‘start and stop’ play.

    On the Video tab, select Sorenson Spark. Click OK to close Settings window.

  4. Click Start Queue to begin encoding. This process will create an FLV file.
