Editing Wikis In AsULearn

A wiki is a collection of collaboratively authored web documents. Basically, it is a web page everyone can create together, right in the browser, without needing to know HTML.

The screen below shows the wiki page similar to what you would see when you enter the wiki to work on for the first time or when you click “Edit” tab.

edit a wiki

  1. “Search Wiki”: you can search certain wiki content by keywords.
  2. “Choose Wiki Links”: Wiki has a set of standard pages which contain several indexes. There is a dropdown menu which shows these different pages.
  3. Help with how to wiki: when you click this icon, it will open a new window with the help information.
  4. Wiki tabs:
    1. View: it shows the most current wiki.
    2. Edit: you can edit a wiki page using a HTML editor.
    3. Links: it shows the parent link that the current page is linked from.
    4. History: it shows all the tracking records of work that has been made in a wiki. You can browse, fetch back to, and see the differences between versions.
  1. “Reload this page”: it refreshes the page.
  2. HTML editor: if you haven’t used the HTML editor in AsULearn, see the instructions of the HTML editor.

There are two buttons on the HTML editor that you may use often when you work on a wiki.

clean word html Clean Word HTML

It is used when you copy text from a Microsoft word document. After pasting the text into the wiki highlight the text then click the icon. This cleans up the HTML code that Microsoft Word includes when you copy text from Microsoft Word. If you do not do this you may find the page acting strangely.

  3. Put the web address of the web site that you want to link to in the URL block. You need to make sure you have the http:// at the start of the address.
  4. Most of the time when linking to web sites you may want them to open in a new window. To do this, select 'new window' from the "Target" dropdown menu.
  5. After putting the URL in and selecting the target click the 'OK' button to update the window. Will not be able to test the link until you save the page. Links do not work in edit mode.

How to Add New Pages to a Wiki

To add new pages to your wiki you have to tell the wiki what words to use as links to the new page. To do this put square brackets around the word or words that you want to become the link. An example of this would be "[This] is a link to a new page."

add new page mark

Notice the word 'This' has a blue question mark beside it. If you click the blue question mark, you will get a new edit screen. The information put into that screen will be linked to the word 'This' and 'This' will become a blue link.
