Restoring an AsULearn Course
For assistance call 266-HELP (4357) or email iDesigner@appstate.edu
Step 1 – There must be a backup file to restore
With any AsUlearn course, the instructor has the ability to create a backup of the entire course to use in
another AsULearn course. When creating a backup, we recommend creating two separate backup files,
one with user data and one without user data. If a backup with user data is restored to a new course, it
brings the students and their work from the old course to the new course. For more detailed
instructions for creating backups visit the following pages.

Step 2 – Save the backup file to the hard drive
We recommend saving the backup files of courses to a local hard drive, that way, faculty have access to
copies that can be restored, if questions arise or if there is a grade dispute. LTS does not have unlimited
storage space. This means at the end of a semester, we send email reminders to backup courses before
they are permanently removed from our servers tomakeroom for the new semester courses. It is the
instructor’s responsibility to create and download backups of courses.
Uploading an old backup file to restore in a new course
If the backup is on your hard drive, upload it to the files area of the new course to restore it.
Course main page > Administration block > Files area
Click the Upload a file link to select the backup file and add it to the course. When creating the backup,
it may be wise to rename the file to indicate which backup has the student data and which has only the
course materials. If there are two backup files made the same day, the larger file probably contains the
student data.

When restoring a backup file, AsULearn allows users to restore the course where the backup resides or
to restore that backup to another course where the instructor is also the teacher of record.
